Whilst we continue to be impressed by, and recommend, the plastic recorders which are made by Mollenhauer we also offer these plastic recorders which are made by a very good Chinese company. Our interest in these recorders was originally aroused when we observed very distinct similarities between them and those sold by a very big name well known to all musicians! When we received our first batch of these recorders we discovered that the ‘similarities’ weren’t only visual. The tone and intonation problems were also similar - not that there are many intonation problems (but if you think you will get a plastic recorder without any, please think again!) For example, the E flat on the bass will certainly need a different fingering – the fingering recommended by the SRP which I always thought worked only on the Yamaha 302 series happens to work very well on these too. We wonder why! These recorders are supplied in attractive leatherette cases with the usual joint grease, sling and cleaning pull-through. If you doubt the quality you are welcome to email us for a picture of the owner’s manual which could tell you something that a certain manufacturer might not want you to know!! The ivory coloured descant bears an uncanny resemblance to the cheaper model produced by “someone else”. The others resemble the better quality plastic model made by or for the same big name. Despite the incredibly low price, the ivory descant really does play easily through two octaves and is better than most of the recorders played by children which Liz used to teach (with the exception of course of those children who owned the big name’s better model!) The price differentials between the colours is, we are told, due entirely to differences in cost producing recorders from different materials. In the case of the smaller recorders there is quite a noticeable tonal difference but we have not found that on the bass models. We have complete confidence in these recorders and our usual 14 day no quibble returns policy applies. |
