THE MORGAN EDITION

Mollenhauer write:

The very highest quality is important for us.
This is why the Morgan Edition is produced only as a limited edition.

Fred Morgan: Perhaps the greatest recorder maker of our time. No other maker has received such worldwide recognition. The list of people who have used his instruments in concert and on CD reads like a "Who's Who" of the top international recorder players.

Morgan died in a road accident in 1999, leaving behind instruments and records that had resulted from decades of the highest quality research and experimentation. In 2002 Mollenhauer and the Morgan family entered into a broad-based partnership with the aim of preserving, evaluating and developing his legacy.

We really take our time when it comes to [The Morgan Edition]; every detail is carefully worked out and every instrument is checked over a long period.

The tone holes: Heavily undercut (small in diameter on the surface but widening out considerably inside the recorder). This brings out the typical late Baroque sound characteristics: stability of tone, flexibility of tone colour and excellent solo projection.

Sound: Each instrument is voiced over a long period. Each intensive testing period is followed by a long interval, so the recorder maker can closely monitor the development of each individual instrument.

Appearance: All surfaces are stained in the traditional manner.

Guaranteed: The recorders have a special guarantee of three years!

Liz’s verdict:

We had to wait two months after we ordered our first Morgan Edition before itarrived, but most surely it was worth it. As it is one of a limited edition it is individually numbered.

In short, this is a beauty - I haven't yet played anything anywhere that i like better and if I ever get into serious recorder playing again then this will be on my shopping list for sure - I did my LGSM on Moeck ebony Rottenburghs which are good of course but nowhere near this good! I recommend it for advanced players only - apart from the price, it needs an advanced player to do it justice.

This recorder was based on Fred Morgan's Denner which he made for Michala Petri. Unless my German is even worse than I think it is, Mollenhauer had access to Michala's recorder during the design stage for this Morgan Denner. If I am wrong on that, perhaps Michala will write and correct me!

The Morgan Edition is available at both A=415 and A=440, and supplied in a pouch of soft leather and comes in two woods – European boxwood (as shown above) at £650, and Indian boxwood(zapatero) at £525. The European boxwood version is available in natural or stained finish.

Please note that if we do not have one immediately available you will need to allow for an order time of at least two months, and a deposit will be required.
