At long last we are able to do something that we have wanted to do for some time, and that is to bring you a comprehensive range of recorders such as would please the most demanding player. The recorder is Liz’s No 1 instrument and she holds the LGSM teacher’s diploma in recorder, so when it comes to comes to identifying a top quality instrument Liz really can blow her own trumpet (or recorder)!

We have been unable to obtain other makes of recorder because it’s the old story of the music industry still being largely hidebound in outmoded ways of thinking and unresponsive to the reality of internet trading. Moeck and Mollenhauer have dominated the recorder market for decades and Yamaha are steadily becoming an important player (sorry about the pun!) and we are delighted that Mollenhauer have accepted us as suppliers.

Mollenhauer probably needs no introduction to those who already play the recorder to a high level and they make a quality range of instruments ideal for players at every standard. Recent developments from Mollenhauer may be a very pleasant surprise to anybody who has not checked them out recently, Liz for one was suitably impressed. Alas, David stubbornly remains a piano only man but even he appreciates the fact that Mollenhauer’s price tags are much kinder than Bechstein’s!

We do not expect to have anything like the whole Mollenhauer range in stock at all times but if we do not have the exact recorder you want then, provided Mollenhauer make it, we should be able to get it quite quickly and give you a good price for it.

Liz will be more than happy to play over the phone so that you will get an excellent idea as to how these recorders sound. Unfortunately the images we have used give the impression in some place that the sizes of the recorder within some group varies with colour: it doesn’t of course, that merely shows that we have not learnt how to edit the pictures correctly. Sorry about that!

Our first order from Mollenhauer consisted of 20 different models mainly at the lower levels, so not all the recorders shown below are immediately available but if required can be obtained from Germany with little delay. All Mollenhauer recorders are guaranteed by them for two years and you also have the benefit of our 14-day no quibble returns policy.

Here is a brief overview of the various models:

SWING PLASTIC RECORDERS: Delightful and beautiful in sound, playing very easily right through the first two octaves, available in black, black/beige and transparent, supplied in cotton bag. And they carry Liz’s highest recommendation.

PRIMA: Plastic head, wood body. A sound nearer to that of wood whilst avoiding the usual problems that wood heads cause young beginners, supplied in cotton bag.

STUDENT: Quite simply, a nice wooden recorder in pearwood for the student who wants a wood recorder. Supplied in cotton bag.

CANTA: A wooden recorder (pearwood) designed for consort playing “light as the human voice”. Worthy of particular mention is the Knick tenor – made on the same principle as a Knick bass, it feels more like a treble than a tenor to play - ideal for SRP players who struggle with the size of a normal tenor. The double keyed tenor has a roll key mechanism just like a flute for easy transition between C and C#. This tenor is supplied in a beautiful plush lined hard case (RRP £51!) and the descants and trebles are supplied in cotton pouch.

DENNER: The standard wooden recorder for solo and consort playing. Supplied in a leather pouch with recorder oil.

ADRI’S DREAM:  Lovers of Van Eyck need look no further. The ‘Dream’ flute is also a great winner with younger players. Here is a range of Renaissance recorders actually based on a Van Eyck recorder – and look at the prices! If you’re working through the higher grades, why not treat yourself to one for an authentic performace of the inevitable Van Eyck piece? The tenor has a tone more like the usual baroque instrument but with a strong lower register - SRP players take note! In fairness we must say that we find the claim that the descant plays a full two-octave range is a little optimistic. Think of this recorder as one for Renaissance music or school use. For pupils working through the grades we would recommend a Swing instead except for your Van Eyck piece.!
